Episode: 12
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 7 October 2026

Trevor prepares his raised garden beds for tomato season, sharing his tips for growing healthy, productive tomatoes.

  • Spring is the ideal time to plant tomatoes. Trevor recommends choosing healthy, spot-free seedlings with lush foliage and planting them in a sunny position with free-draining, organic-rich soil.
  • Unlike most plants, tomatoes benefit from being planted deeper, with part of the stem buried beneath the soil. This encourages additional root growth, helping plants establish faster and grow stronger.
  • Trevor uses Seasol Plant Health & Soil Improver Granules to improve soil structure, moisture and nutrient retention while supporting beneficial soil microorganisms. The easy-to-use shaker format is suitable for all plants, including natives.
  • He then pairs this with PowerFeed Granulated Tomatoes & Vegetables, which provides nitrogen for vigorous growth and calcium to help prevent common problems such as blossom end rot and fruit cracking. Together, the products feed both the soil and plants, with slow-release nutrition lasting up to three months.
  • Trevor also recommends keeping up with feeding during the early stages of growth, following product directions and supplementing with liquid PowerFeed as plants establish.
  • Finally, Trevor discusses the benefits of eating home-grown tomatoes including the importance of lycopene and its potential role in prostate health.
